On a hot Sunday, July 26th, 2020, the world was still adjusting to the quiet silence of early COVID days. Neither Obi or Peace was looking for love. In fact, love seemed like the last thing on either of their minds. Obi was attending a friend’s cookout, and Peace was in town from Boston, serving as the designated driver for a girls' weekend in New York City. She had just graduated from law school and was knee deep in bar exam prep. It was supposed to be a quick trip, a break before returning to her books.
But fate had other plans.
In a random gathering of strangers, Peace and Obi found themselves seated near one another. From the very beginning, conversation flowed like they'd known each other for years. Obi shared photos of recent meals he’d tried to cook; Peace teased him mercilessly about every single one. The banter was easy. The energy was warm and something unspoken lingered in the air.
As the night wound down and the guys escorted the ladies to their cars, Peace and Obi naturally drifted to the back of the group, as if trying to hold onto something neither of them fully understood just yet. Obi asked for her number and, before they parted ways, gently kissed her on the forehead, a quiet gesture that said, this is not the end of tonight.
Peace drove her friends home and as they all dozed off in the car, her mind was far from quiet. It was filled with thoughts of Obi. Around 3 a.m., her phone rang. It was him, just making sure she got home safely. That night call blossomed into a marathon conversation. They talked about everything: childhood memories, family traditions, values, dreams, beliefs. When Obi had to get ready for work a few hours later, neither of them wanted to hang up.
And they never really did.
Just weeks later, Peace traveled to Nigeria to spend three months with family before starting her full-time job. It was a tricky time, a new connection, long distance and expensive data plans but none of that mattered. They were inseparable, even oceans apart. Every spare moment was spent on the phone, finding new reasons to fall deeper in love.
By the time Peace returned to the U.S. in January, it was clear. This was it. On January 18, 2021, they made it official. Family and friends began to notice how often one was smiling at a phone, laughing at a message, or “unavailable” because they were always with the other. And when they were together, it just made sense. There was joy, peace, and an undeniable ease.
Through career shifts, moves, challenges, and milestones, they showed up for one another. They grew, both individually and together. They celebrated wins, took countless adventures, and wrapped each other in unwavering support. Wherever they went, people would say the same thing: You two just make sense.
So even though, in their hearts, they already knew they were married, Obi made it official. On September 28, 2024, he got down on one knee and proposed.
Now, they’re here - grateful, grounded, and ready to say “I do” in front of the people who mean the most to them. This is more than a wedding. It’s a celebration of what happens when love finds you, even when you’re not looking.
A story written not by chance, but by grace.
